The Gas Heart was the closing work on NON:op's 2018 program entitled On the Cusp, a set of four works from the historical avant garde poised between theatre, music, and movement, performed by artists with and without disabilities.

This three-act video production invited the original performers to recreate their lines for their smart phones, and to send the video files to us. Christophe Preissing composed and recorded original incidental music for the video and co-directed the production. Theo Economides edited the video and co-directed the production.

Actors include: Hal Cosentino, Arlene Malinowski, Andy Slater, Michael Herzovi, Kyle Gregory Price, and Clare Brennan. Musicians include: Alexandria Hill, Lilianna Wosko, Natalie Szabo, Chris Misch-Bloxdort, and Steve Butters.

On November 19, 1863, President Lincoln spoke at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery and described the United States as a nation “conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” As we continue to witness disproportionate brutality against Black Americans, NON:op Open Opera Works presents L’sGA : Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, a concert tour of three commissioned works by Black artists that re-interpret and re-present the Gettysburg Address and Sal Martirano’s 1967 anti-war classic, L’sGA.

Chicago Hip Hop artist and poet Kao Ra Zen, 3Arts awardee and multidisciplinary artist A.J. McClenon, and Urbana poet laureate Ja Nelle Davenport-Pleasure explore themes of liberty, oppression, patriotism, racism, and revolution. Chicago Emmy winner, actor, and playwright, Willie “Prince Roc” Round, will be featured in a new production of Martirano’s L’sGA.

Concerts take place in Bloomington at the McLean County Museum of History (March 4), Urbana at the Independent Media Center (March 5), and Chicago at Elastic Arts (March 12). The performances will be preceded by a reading of the Gettysburg Address and poet and L’sGA collaborator M.C. Holloway’s Dance Wreck. The Bloomington and Urbana programs will include a presentation on the meaning and relevance of the Gettysburg Address. The Urbana program will include a presentation by the Writers of Oya from their writing workshop conducted by Ja Nelle and Kao.

NON:op's live stream of Memoria de Memoria: for Keith Cooper and Chicago’s 793 Homicide Victims in 2021

Memoria de Memoria—loosely, “Memory of the Heart”—is an hour-long meditative composition for twelves voices. The memoria de memoria text is sung on troubadour melodies, which are based on the church modes and are related to jazz scales. All 793 names will be spoken in time—January through December—with each day represented by ten seconds of the score. As a meditation, audience members are encouraged to come and go quietly during the performance, light memorial candles, offer photos and mementos to remember those lost, or to call out the name of a family member or friend who they wish to remember. As each person killed is unique, each of the twelve voices is a soloist, positioned around Augustana’s sanctuary.
